The Rare Barrel
All hail the sour beer! The Rare Barrel has the sour beer down to perfection, as well as the vibe of a relaxed, yet happening brewery. It might be a little hard to find, as it is positioned at the back of their parking lot, but they have a cute warehouse space filled with couches, long dining tables, and a long bar for tasting and getting the bartender's best recommendations for what you might like. Their grilled cheese sandwich is my bar snack of choice, but look out for the changing menu as both the sour beers and food from the kitchen are swapped with new items!
Triple Rock Brewing
Owned and operated by their original founders since 1986, Triple Rock is made of proud brothers serving Berkeley their best beer. Well known for their "Monkey Heads," a 8.5% beer brewed on-site- treated as a right of passage when going to Triple Rock for the first time. Join students, professors and locals to watch the latest Cal Berkeley Sports game on TV.
Hoi Polloi Brewing
Located in South Berkeley, Hoi Polloi is the perfect laid back spot to order a new beer, catch up with a friend, and enjoy their complimentary popcorn tossed with truffle oil. Also known as a 'beat lounge,' they host DJs to play at their location. It is a small yet cute spot with a main bar and a few tables in the front and at the back of the brewery. Decorated with unique and abstract art pieces along their walls, Hoi Polloi sets an interesting vibe along to match the good music. Pick from their House Beers, Sours as well as Ciders
One of the more 'hip' breweries in the East Bay, Temescal is modern, young, full of color, pretty outdoor lights, and beer of course. Weekly they host a variety of different food trucks each day right out front of their entrance to grab food, and head inside to get a beer, find a table and relax. Upon entering you'll immediately see the bar, and their menu of creativitly titled beers on tap as well as a few indoor tables. Turn the corner and you're greeted with a huge outdoor patio, filled with communal picnic benches. Perfect for large groups, or a date, and occasionally for dancing the night away- as they hold themed events to draw in new crowds to enjoy their latest beer, a live DJ and mingling under the heat lamps.
